Exploring New York City with Kids: The Best Playgrounds Near Must-See Sights

As a mom of three, I know firsthand that a vacation with young kids is rarely relaxing. However, with the right mix of playgrounds, snack stops, and interesting things to climb on, kids can stay entertained long enough for parents to sneak in some sights they’ve been longing to see. Here’s a guide to some of the best playgrounds in New York City, located near attractions that both kids and adults will enjoy.

Battery Playscape

This fantastic playground is right next to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, making it an ideal stop if the ferry is on your itinerary. Start your morning with a coffee from Gregory’s at Broadway and Exchange Place, then grab breakfast at Liberty Bagels. Their rainbow bagels and unique flavor options will delight your kids, while Gregory’s coffee gives adults the boost they need for a day of adventure.

Stroll down Broadway and enjoy your bagels at Bowling Green, the oldest public park in New York. Take a moment to notice the historic fence that surrounds the park. Once topped with crowns to honor King George III, these adornments were torn down during the Revolution and the statue of the King was toppled over repurposed as musket balls. Nearby, you’ll find the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, housed in Alexander Hamilton’s former U.S. Custom House, and four statues representing Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas—key continents in historic trade.

Cross Broadway to spot the flagpole marking the site where Native Americans sold their land to the Dutch, then wander through Battery Park. The Battery Playscape is a perfect spot for kids to burn off energy. Restrooms are conveniently located just outside the playground. Afterward, hop aboard the free Staten Island Ferry for the iconic views of the Statue of Liberty. Once back, head to the magical Seaglass Carousel, a whimsical ride that’s a hit with all ages.

For lunch, try Wafels & Dinges near the ferry terminal or Pixie Scout in the park. Battery Park offers more to explore, including Castle Clinton, beautifully maintained gardens, and The Castello Plan—a hidden gem featuring a 3D map of New Amsterdam. If it’s a hot day, cool off at the Battery Fountain Splash Pad. For a meal with historical flair, head out of the park to Fraunces Tavern—a site rich with Revolutionary history.

Brooklyn Bridge Park

A quick ferry ride from Wall Street takes you to Brooklyn Bridge Pier 6, offering breathtaking views of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge. Head to the roof deck of the ferry for the best photo ops. Once you arrive, restrooms are conveniently located near the ferry stop.

The park’s playground areas include Slide Mountain, Swing Valley, and Sandbox Village, ensuring fun for all ages. Slightly further north, you’ll find the Water Lab—perfect for cooling off and packed with fun features. When hunger strikes, Fornino on the pier offers delicious pizza, while Iris Café provides more dining options.

Continue north along Brooklyn Bridge Parkway. Grab coffee from Arabica, or treat the family to something sweet at Van Leeuwen or the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Enjoy your treats in the picturesque River Café Gardens. Pass through Emily Warren Roebling Plaza (learn about the woman who played a crucial role in building the Brooklyn Bridge here). Don’t miss family photos at Max Family Garden and take a nostalgic ride on Jane’s Carousel, a century-old carousel.

For a broader dining experience, Time Out Market offers a variety of food options. If your kids still have energy, Main Street Playground’s tire swing and other attractions are great for younger visitors (and there are nearby bathrooms located in the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy Center). Wrap up your adventure by taking the ferry at Fulton Ferry Terminal or the subway at High Street or York Street back to Manhattan.

Pearl Street Playground

For families interested in maritime history, South Street Seaport is the perfect destination. Start your day at the Tin Building on South Street for coffee and pastries. For a fun and interactive way to explore the area, consider our Seaport Mini Quest, a family-friendly scavenger hunt. Riddle-based questions guide you to iconic landmarks, hidden gems, and coffee shops, ending at a playground.

Other stops to consider are climbing aboard the historic Wavertree ship - entry is free and tickets can be obtained at South Street Seaport Museum. Stop by Bowne & Co. for charming stationery, indulge in a s’mores cookie from Funny Face Bakery, or grab a coffee (or wine) at McNally & Jackson, a beautiful bookstore with a lovely kids’ section upstairs.

End your visit at Pearl Street Playground or, in the summer, the Imagination Playground, which features fun water play options. The cobblestone streets and historic charm of the Seaport make this area a delight for families.

No matter where your NYC adventure takes you, there are countless ways to keep kids entertained while exploring the city’s rich history, iconic landmarks, and hidden gems. Happy exploring!
